One Banana One Monkey
Posted by: | Comments“One Banana One Monkey” is your new mantra for 2010. So what does it mean? Let me give you some background first.
One of the most important elements of business is knowing specifically who your target market is. Once you know who you are talking to, all your advertising and marketing should be directed at them. This is even more important on the internet. If a reader landing on your page doesn’t find what they are looking for, you only have about 5 secs to get their attention.
So, how does “One Banana One Monkey” relate? Your website as a whole must be focusing on a clear specific target market. Then each page must be on one single relevant sub section.
If you have several target markets or businesses, separate them – ideally with separate websites.
For example, over the Christmas Period I visited a retreat. The company who owns the retreat also have a Yoga company, a training company and a dancing company. The clients who would go to the retreat may be interested in some of the other products but not necessarily. By trying to promote all your businesses to all your database, you can potentially upset and lose your valuable clients. They are expecting one thing from you and getting another.
Think of it this way. You land on a website which offers a fr*ee report on increasing your website traffic. You think great, so you sign up to receive the report. The report arrives in your inbox, you read it and love it. Since you loved the report so much you decided to call them for a consultation. Just as you are able to make the call, you receive another email from them. Thinking it’s going to be more of the same great information you hurry and open it, only to discover it’s an article on fishing. How does this article effective your perceived creditability of this company now and their website traffic generation strategies? Changes are you will rethink that phone call.
Ok, so it’s an extreme example but believe me it happens. So how to avoid this situation?
ONE BANANA ONE MONKEY – The Monkey is your target market and only feed them one Banana at a time no apples, oranges or watermelons.
